Let’s use Positive Phrasing to children ✍️📝

✴︎

Positive phrasing clearly communicates what behaviour is expected.

By saying “we’re walking inside,” children know exactly what they should do, rather than just what they shouldn’t do. Using positive phrases helps children learn how to manage their emotions and behaviour.

✴︎

“Wait your turn” instead of Don’t push.

”Use Gentle hands” instead of Don’t hit.

”Listen carefully” instead of Don’t ignore me.

”Use your words to express how you feel” instead of Don’t cry.

”We sit while we eat” instead of Don’t stand on the chair.

”Show respect to everyone” instead of Don’t be rude.

Negative phrasing can have a significant impact on children’s development, behavior, and self-esteem.

Negative phrasing, such as “don’t mess up,” can lead children to internalise these messages, potentially lowering their self-esteem and belief in their abilities.

They may start to feel like they are always doing something wrong, which can discourage exploration and learning. Negative phrasing can cause feelings of guilt, shame, or anxiety in children.
